Running Better Remote Meetings
Seven habits that make video calls shorter, calmer and more useful — tested by teams on Akon Chat.
1. Start in the channel, not the call
Post the agenda and any documents in the channel a day before. People arrive prepared and the call itself gets shorter.
2. Default to 25 minutes
Shorter default slots leave buffer time between calls and force sharper discussion.
3. Use reactions instead of interruptions
A quick 👍 or ✋ in chat keeps the speaker flowing while still signalling agreement or questions.
4. Share one screen, one topic
Close unrelated tabs and present one thing at a time. Screen sharing is clearer when it is focused.
5. Record decisions, not conversations
Pin a three-line summary — decision, owner, date — in the thread straight after the call.
6. Mute by default in large calls
Noise cancellation helps, but muting keeps calls with 10+ people clean.
7. Cancel meetings that could be a thread
If there is nothing to decide, an async update in the channel respects everyone’s time.
